Fenerbahce Begin Campaign With A Win
Following a strong preseason, Fenerbahce continued their impressive form with a win over recently-promoted Torino. "We fought to comeback, and our defense did just enough to stave off another equalizer," said Coach Bronc. Giuliano kicked off the scoring for Fenerbahce, but a Torino team that looked livelier in the second half equalized with a half hour left to play. Robin van Persie netted a nice shot to give Fenerbahce back the lead, and then Kameni and the group of strong defenders in front of him stifled Belotti and Torino's other attackers for the remainder of the match. "3 points is a good start obviously," said Coach Bronc, "but there are still some things we need to clean up." The jury is still out on whether or not Fenerbahce will continue their fine preseason form or revert back to fighting off relegation, but matches against Southampton and Watford later this week will likely be a good indicator on what to expect from Fenerbahce this season.

Gignac Sits, Tigres win on Road in Opener

In a surprising move, Coach Everbro decided to put veteran striker, Andre-Pierre Gignac on the bench for their opening match. A prideful man, Gignac made his feelings known to the press after the game: “Look, I’m glad we won. We played very well. But not being out on the pitch, it sucks. I hope to get some playing time this week.” Needless to say he was not happy with his manager’s decision.

The Tigres were on the attack from the start and pushed the ball up and down the pitch with great pace early on. Jurgen Damm nearly opened the scoring in the 5th minute but narrowly missed a header off the crossbar. Several other chances came and went in the first half until newcomer Enner Valencia rebounded a saved header from a Javy Aquino corner. The ball deflected off of Sirigu’s gloves and right to Valencia’s head in the 44th. An easy finish for the Ecuador international and the first goal of the season.

In the second half the Tigres remained the aggressor and dominated the match with their passing. Javy Aquino finished the match with seven shots and three on target. Damm and Sosa each took four with two on target. Some great midfield play by Rafael Carioca gave him the man of the match in his Tigres’ debut. The Mexican side finished off Torino with a marvelous volley by Aquino after Damm broke through on the right side of the pitch. He delivered a fantastic cross to the wide open left winger to make it 2-0.

Three points in the opening match is exactly what the Tigres wanted. An unhappy striker is not, however. If the Tigres continue to play without their former leading scorer this won’t be the last time Gignac goes to the press. As for now, the three points is most important. The Tigres will continue their opening week with matches against Watford and Marseille.

Borussia MonchenGladbach kicked off their season in style with a 4-0 win away at Crystal Palace. The visitors were lead by a hat-trick from their main man Thorgan Hazard. The Belgian was lethal in front of net and received excellent service from his attacking partner Lars Stindl. The Germans were also excellent in defense in earning the clean sheet and the 3 points.

Nice fell behind early in their season opener, only 11 minutes in on a cross that was deflected just enough by Stepanenko and through the legs of Cardinale. Nice drew even when Plea's shot hit the far post and in, leaving little chance for the Shaktar keeper to make the save. Super Mario would put his team ahead just minutes before the end of the first half, showing composure with 3 defenders surrounding him, and firing a shot top corner. Both teams continued to defend well and not allow much room until Balotelli found an opening in the box in the 72nd minute and put it past the diving keeper for the brace. Despite Nice's struggles at times, they were able to come away with an important first win.

Monchengladbach keeps their offense rolling with a 5-1 win in their home opener vs Swansea. The crowd at Borussia Park was up for it... And so was the home side. Braces from Lars Stindl and Thorgan Hazard led the way with Ibrahima Traore adding a fifth goal. 9 goals in two matches with 6 points is a dream start for the Germans as they look to stake their claim as one of the title contenders in TSL A.
